Q&A with Pro Triathlete Ben Hoffman

Ben on Cycling
I have been riding bikes since day one! I still remember taking off my training wheels and graduating the tiger stripe Huffy to small dirt jumps in my neighborhood. Custom bike paint jobs came next with my bmx bike receiving shiny coats of silver spray paint. The true cycling start would have to be in high school when my Dad bought me my “green machine” Specialized Allez Elite for family bike touring. In college, this Allez would be the bike I used to start my triathlon career.
Cycling is a large part of the success for a triathlete, so I make sure I get the miles done every day.
Ben on Food & Wine
Living outside of Palisade, CO, I was fortunate to work at the Grande River Vineyard during a college summer break with a good friend of mine, David. His knowledge, paired with laboring first hand at the vineyard, exposed me to the complexities of winemaking. From my days living in Durango, CO, I met winemaker Ben Parsons, who would go on to start Infinite Monkey Theorem Urban Winery in Denver, CO. Having great friends involved at the ground level really gives you access to the passion required to make great wine.
Community is a huge aspect of cycling. Like good meals and wine, cycling is better when shared. These moments are small acts of celebration; whether it is cycling with friends through a beautiful spot or toasting to friends health and happiness.
I am an equal opportunity consumer when it comes to wine and beer. However, being introduced to thoughtful, well-crafted wine has made me a very discerning consumer (but far from an expert). Having friends like Ben Parsons at Infinite Monkey Theorem Winery has really allowed me to develop my personal taste–seeing and tasting through the entire process. I tend to gravitate more toward new world, fruit forward reds. Yet, after a day in the saddle with friends, there is nothing like an ice cold beer.
I am a big fan of the CLIF Nut Butter Filled Bars and haven’t met a flavor that I didn’t like. I also love the original CLIF Nuts and Seeds bar….to which I sometimes add my own nut butter!
How Ben Spends his Free Time
I really enjoy creating art. Whether it’s throwing pottery on the wheel or welding bits of rusty metal that I find on my rides into something interesting for our home. I love using my hands to create something unique. My wife, Kelsey and I also love to camp and spend time outdoors. We were able to honeymoon last year by traveling up the coast of California in an Airstream Safari!
