On the bike (and at the table) with Ivan Dominguez

Ivan Dominguez loves to eat. He also loves cycling, which makes this spring’s CLIF CampoVelo Gran Fondo event in Napa Valley the perfect mix of food and fitness for the highly accomplished former cyclist and current triathlete. “In my cycling days I had to watch my weight more for the climbing,” he says. “These days I’m able to enjoy myself a bit more.” Held in wine country, amidst the scenic majesty of lush vineyards and the Mayacamas Mountains, CampoVelo is the ultimate weekend of food, fun and cycling. In addition to the cycling over the course of the three-day event, CampoVelo features some of the finest chefs in the country. So whether you come for a day or the weekend, everyone will enjoy a festive, fun, and flavorful experience.

From Cycling to Triathlons

Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Dominguez (a.k.a. The Cuban Missile) was one of the most decorated sprinters of his generation, having won multiple Gold and Silver Medals in the Pan American Games and has been the Cuban National Champion with records that still stand. Having retired a few years back, Ivan now concentrates on Triathlons, an event he finds quite difficult, compared to the bike. “It’s not an easy transition,” says Ivan. “It’s totally different training and the swimming has been the most difficult. However, I do enjoy it more than cycling. I like the variety and the fact I race against individuals from 16 to 80 years old.” Ivan earned his pro triathlon license in 2016 and has set realistic goals for 2019: “I love to compete and hope to have some strong races, even victories, in the coming months, but I’m also trying to enjoy the experience.”

Dine and Dash at Calistoga

This is Ivan’s first CampoVelo—an event he’d heard about from friends—and he relished the opportunity to participate this year. Each day features a number of enticing activities, in addition to cycling. There’s hiking, yoga, culinary demos, benefit dinners, and plenty of world-class wine. Ivan is particularly excited about the Calistoga Speedway event on Saturday night at the Napa County Fairgrounds. The evening features teams of four racing a half-mile circuit on a dirt track. “That sounds like a lot of fun,” says Ivan. “Hand-off races on the dirt…and I hear Bob Roll is the announcer, so that should be fun. And I’m told there are food trucks, beer, and music. What else could you want?”

Ivan Fun Facts

Favorite Post-Ride Meal: “Pretty simple actually, I’m not too hungry after a hard ride, so it’s usually something like a ham-and-cheese sandwich with lettuce and avocado. And a Coke…gotta have a Coke.”

Favorite Wine: “You know I’m not a big wine drinker, typically reds, I guess.”

Favorite Beer: “I tend to drink the lighter stuff, lagers”

Favorite Cyclying Memories: “The camaraderie. Hanging out with the guys.”
